We Have Contributed to a Parliamentary Report on Digital Disengagement
10/08/2024

We are thrilled to have been able to contribute to an important POSTnote on “Digital Disengagement and Impacts on Exclusion”. The brief outlines motivational reasons for not being online or using digital devices, and how this can contribute to digital exclusion and other forms of inequality.

In line with our research, the report highlights how a “lack of interest”, “lack of confidence and skill”, “safety concerns”, and and poor user interface make it more likely that someone will remain offline and experience the impacts of digital exclusion. It also discusses how digital disengagement exacerbates existing inequalities, including health inequality, employment inequality, education inequality, financial inequality, and others.

We welcome this report and hope it will stimulate future research into this complex issue.
